Sandy, a native of Broussard and resident of Lafayette, died Saturday June 28, 2025, at her home surrounded by family. For over 20 years, she drove a school bus for Lafayette Parish School System. She was a familiar and comforting presence behind the wheel of her school bus #7…. not just a bus driver, but a friend, a protector, and a daily source of warmth and reliability for countless passengers. Rain or shine, she made her rounds with pride and safety, always knowing that each stop was an opportunity to connect with a student who needed transportation and often, a kind word. Her legacy extends far beyond her career. As a mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother she was the heart of our family, and we were her greatest accomplishments in life. She was loving, steady, selfless, and full of quiet strength. She taught us by example what it means to work hard, love deeply, take care of those around us and to not fear the unknown or death. She was an amazing Moma and Mimi.
She is survived by her daughter, Angelique “Angel” Racca and her husband Troy of Broussard; her son, Shane Guilbeau and his significant other Nicole Franklin of Broussard; three grandchildren, Jobie Lagrange, Shae Racca and his significant other Heilie Vicknair and McKenzi Racca; six great-grandchildren, Emilia Fangue, Oliver Lagrange, Laikyn Chatagnier, Xzavier Racca, Gracelyn Racca, and baby Camden Racca due in August; four brothers, Rayford Demette and wife Reneé, Harry Demette and wife Brenda, Randy Demette and wife Karen, Kermit Demette and wife Christine; godchildren, Melissa Girouard and Jeffrey Benoit and numerous nieces and nephews. Cricket and Fiona her cat fur babies.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Terry J. Guilbeau; her grandson, Kael James Racca; her parents, Dudley and Ezare Begnaud Demette; two brothers, Harry James Demette and Bradley Demette; two sisters, Eva Rose Demette and Glenda Girouard; and her sister in law, Cynthia “Sandy” Guilbeau Benoit.
