New Iberia- Funeral services for John "Johnny" Romero, 94, who passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2026, will be held at 1:00PM on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at Frioux Funeral Home Chapel in New Iberia with Father Keith Landry officiating. Interment will follow at Nativity of Our Lady Mausoleum. 

Visitation will take place at Frioux Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at 11:00AM until the time of service with recitation of the rosary at 11:00AM.

John “Johnny” Romero passed away peacefully on June 4, 2026, at the age of ninety-four. While his family grieves his loss, they also celebrate a life that was lived fully, boldly, and on his own terms. For nearly a century, Johnny was a larger-than-life presence to those who knew him. He was a devoted family man, a gifted businessman, a talented musician, and a generous friend. He possessed an energy and optimism that never seemed to fade, and he approached every stage of life with curiosity, determination, and a belief that tomorrow always held another opportunity.

Born on October 11, 1931, to Louis B. Romero Sr and Anise Viator Romero, Johnny learned early the values of hard work and responsibility. As a young boy, he worked alongside his brothers in the family’s grocery store, delivering groceries throughout the community. Those early experiences helped shape the work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit that would define the rest of his life. He was wise in ways that cannot be taught in a classroom. He understood people, recognized opportunity, and possessed a remarkable instinct for business. If Johnny believed something was a good deal, he knew exactly what to do with it.

Music was one of his first loves. At just fourteen years old, he joined his brothers in a family band, “B. Romero & His Teche Play Boys,” playing both drums and bass. Johnny even had the opportunity to perform with the Grand Old Opry Band. What began as a love of music eventually led his brother, Harold Romero, to establish Romero Music Company where Johnny worked. This business opened a door to countless other ventures including Johnny promoting very successful musicians. His entrepreneurial journey would continue for decades, fueled by hard work, confidence, and enthusiasm.

To Johnny, business was never simply about making a living—it was something he genuinely enjoyed. He loved the challenge, the relationships, and the excitement of creating something new. In truth, he never really retired. He was always working on a deal, exploring a new idea, helping someone solve a problem, or finding the next opportunity. He loved staying engaged and doing things his own way.Yet those closest to him knew that his greatest strength was not his business acumen and success, but his generosity. Johnny had a big heart and a deep desire to help others. He quietly assisted countless people over the years and gave generously to causes that

improved the lives of those around him. His love for New Iberia and its people was evident in everything he did.

More than anything, Johnny loved his family. He was proud of them, devoted to them, and happiest when surrounded by them. His stories, laughter, wisdom, and unwavering support will be deeply missed, but the lessons he taught and the example he set will remain with them forever. One of his greatest accomplishments was mentoring his grandson, Chase Romero, to carry forward his legacy.

Geri Frederick, better known to Johnny as “Sugah,” was his loving companion and partner for over forty years. She will always cherish the many memories they made together and continue to contribute to the community in his honor. The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Mandy Latulus, Cathy Celestine, and Raychiel Lee for their compassion, care, and support in his time of need.

Johnny leaves behind more than memories. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, perseverance, generosity, and love. The businesses he built, the friendships he cherished, the community he served, and the family he loved are lasting reminders of a life exceptionally well lived. Though his shoes can never truly be filled, his example will continue to guide and inspire those fortunate enough to have known him.
