Mr. George McJunkins, Jr. passed away at home on Monday, May 11, 2026. He was a devoted family man whose greatest joy came from spending time with those he loved most. He enjoyed the simple pleasures in life including sitting outdoors on his patio, BBQing for family and friends, working crossword puzzles, and cheering on his favorite teams, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns and the Louisiana State University Tigers. An avid reader, he had a lifelong curiosity and appreciation for learning. He dedicated more than 30 years of service to the Department of Transportation, where he built a respected and meaningful career. Earlier in his professional life, he worked for Boeing in Maryland and was honored to work with NASA on the Saturn V rocket for the Apollo Program. He carried those accomplishments with great pride.

He was never a man who sought attention. He was quiet, humble, and happiest when surrounded by the people he loved most. He did not need a crowd to feel fulfilled, only the comfort of those closest to him. Yet despite his quiet nature, he left a lasting impression everywhere he went. People were drawn to him instantly. Many described him as “the sweetest little man” they had ever met or spoke of how precious he was after only a brief encounter. There was something about his presence - gentle, kind, and sincere - that made people feel at ease and deeply cared for. When these stories were shared with him, he would simply smile that big, unforgettable smile, never fully realizing just how much light he brought into the lives of others. Though humble to his core, you could tell it meant the world to him to know he was loved not only by his family, but also by the strangers he met throughout his journey in life. He had a rare gift: he could fill an entire room without ever saying a word. His presence alone brought warmth, comfort, and love. Mr. George will be remembered for his love of family, his steady presence, his hardworking spirit, and the many memories shared around backyard gatherings and football games.

A Message from the McJunkins family:

Just last week, Dad shared with Mom how proud he was of his own father. He talked about how his dad was always teaching himself new skills and finding ways to do things on his own, and how that spirit stayed with him throughout his life. He smiled as he said how proud he was to see that same determination and independence passed down to us (Amy and Neil), always challenging ourselves, always learning, and never being afraid to figure things out on our own. It was one of the many quiet lessons Dad gave us, not just through words, but through the way he lived every day.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Rae Minvielle McJunkins of Lafayette; his children, Neil McJunkins and his wife Tracy of Lafayette and Amy McJunkins of Lafayette; his numerous nephews; and his beloved grand-dogs, Maya and Gracie.

He is preceded in death by his parents, George McJunkins, Sr. and Mabel Lahaye McJunkins; and his siblings, Barbara McJunkins Rose, Kenneth McJunkins, Linda Arnaud, and Peggy McJunkins.
