Eugene “Sonny” Baudry, Jr., age 76, passed away on August 8, 2026 in Lake Charles, LA. Born on November 1, 1949, in Jeanerette, LA, Sonny lived a life marked by dedication to education, a deep love for his family, and an unforgettable sense of humor.
Sonny pursued his education at the University of Southwestern Louisiana, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Education and Master’s in Administration and Supervision. His passion for learning and teaching led him to a distinguished career in education. He began as a teacher at Jeanerette High School before becoming the youngest principal in Iberia Parish at Canal Street Elementary. Sonny’s leadership skills and commitment to excellence propelled him further as he served as the Iberia Parish Assistant Superintendent (8 years) before ultimately becoming Superintendent (11 years). His contributions to education left an indelible mark on countless students and colleagues.
Outside of his professional life, Sonny found joy in simple pleasures. He was an avid fisherman and took great pride in maintaining his lawn and tending to his annual garden. A true enthusiast of “The Andy Griffith Show,” Sonny was considered an expert on all things related to the beloved series. In addition to Andy Griffith, Sonny was a devoted New Orleans Saints fan. Those who knew him will fondly remember his sharp wit, quirky sense of humor, and that unmistakable twinkle in his eye that often-left people wondering if he was being serious-a quality that could only be described by a Cajun as “canaille.”
Sonny is survived by his loving children: his daughter Virginia (Steven) and his son Benjamin, his siblings Helen (Vernon d.), Barbara (Calvin d.) and Rene (Monica) and his granddaughters Olivia Claire and Ava Ann.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Stephanie Guillot, his parents Eugene, Sr. and Ruby Baudry and his faithful and loving dog, Jolie a.k.a. Jojo.
Sonny’s intelligence, humor and warmth touched the lives of many. His legacy will live on through the memories shared by those fortunate enough to have known him. May his memory bring comfort to all who mourn his passing.
