Dorothy Lynn (Duhon) Mergist, age 87, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2025, in Abbeville, Louisiana. Dorothy was born on July 28, 1937, and spent her life enriching the lives of others through her work, her cooking, and her boundless love for family and the community of Erath.

Known affectionately as “Mrs. Dot,” Dorothy dedicated over three decades to nurturing generations of students as the Cafeteria Manager at Erath High and Erath Middle Schools. Her warm smile and hearty meals made her a beloved figure among students and staff alike. Beyond the school cafeteria, she co-owned a catering business that brought her culinary talents to countless weddings, celebrations, and community events. She also worked for 17 years at Champagne’s Deli, where her presence was as comforting as the food she prepared.

Dorothy’s contributions did not go unnoticed. She was honored with numerous accolades over the years, including being named Erath Lady Citizen of the Year and Catholic Daughter of the Year. She received two Bobcat Yearbook dedications and was inducted into the Erath High Hall of Fame. In a fitting tribute to her community spirit, she was named Fourth of July Grand Marshal—an honor that reflected her deep roots in Erath and her unwavering commitment to those around her.

Her kitchen was always a place of welcome—a hub of delicious aromas, laughter, and storytelling. Mrs. Dot had a passion for cooking that extended far beyond recipes; it was an expression of love. Whether preparing meals for school events or hosting family gatherings, she infused every dish with warmth and generosity.

A woman of deep compassion and humor, Dorothy never met a stranger. Her kindness touched all who crossed her path. She delighted in sharing stories—especially tales of the playful pranks pulled on school coaches—and brought joy wherever she went.

Dorothy’s family was the heart of her world. She is survived by her children: Loretta Mergist Milliman; Adam Benny Mergist II (Janalyn); Roslyn Mergist Broussard (Mark); Lance Louis Mergist (Kathleen); Leah Renee' Mergist (James); and daughter-in-law Idell Guerra. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Robert, Joshua, Tyrel, Jamario, Jed, Joni, Adam, Jack, Seth, Eddie, Lily Beth, Tucker, Vernon, Kelly, and Brad; 32 great-grandchildren; and twin great-great-grandsons, Sutter and Hudson. She is also remembered by her siblings: Glenda LeBouef, Kathleen Molaison, Debbie Troney; brothers Carol Duhon and Billy Duhon Sr.; and sisters-in-law Connie LeBlanc (Francis) and Barbara Mergist.

Dorothy now joins in eternal rest with her beloved husband Adam Benny Mergist; son David Robert Guerra; grandchildren Joseph "Chas" Milliman III, Chloe Mergist, and Gideon Blake Broussard; siblings Irma Pellegrin, Loula Langlinais, Jasper Duhon Jr.; sisters-in-law Georgia Mergist, Annette Mergist, Gib Touchet (Timmy), Ruth Landry (Calvin); and brothers-in-law Paul Mergist and Bradley Mergist.

Her grandchildren will serve as pallbearers, readers, and gift bearers.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Vital Caring Home Health & Palliative Care Services, Hospice of Acadiana, and the staff at The Vermilion Eastridge Rehab and Nursing Home for their compassionate care during Dorothy’s final days.

Dorothy Lynn Mergist leaves behind a legacy steeped in love, laughter, service, and unforgettable meals shared around full tables. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her.

Frioux-David Funeral Home of Erath, 209 East Putnam Street, (337) 937-0405 will be handling the service.
