Claudette was born on September 3, 1951 to Francis Newton and Clara LeBlanc of Broussard, LA. She was born with a caring soul, a deep love of animals and a steadfast loyalty to her friends and family. She attended St. Cecilia Elementary and Comeaux High School. She furthered her education at USL, receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Education in 1974 and her Masters in Elementary Education in 1980.
She started working for the Lafayette Parish School Board in 1974. For 23 years she taught kindergarten at Katherine Drexel Elementary in Broussard. She initiated the SFA program at Alice Boucher in Lafayette in 1997 and finished her career at Ernest Gallet in Youngsville in 2008.
Claudette was able to make a lasting impact on so many young lives across multiple generations. Her classroom was one of a kind with teddy bear themes and, eventually, dogs, original curriculum, creative charts, handmade decor, and beautiful calligraphy-style handwriting. Her fellow educators became lifelong friends and an inspiration. Generous with her time, she put others before herself. This was Claudette!
She was equally passionate about her pets. Without a doubt, she truly loved her animals! Over the years, they gave her the unconditional love she deserved. An avid supporter of animal rights, she contributed to local shelters and participated in annual events.
Claudette enjoyed the local live music scene and let her hair down at many festivals. She had a fantastic taste in music and an expansive collection of vinyls. Claudette loved a wide variety of art; Impressionist painters were her favorites. She had an eye for photography, taking pictures wherever she went. A lifelong reader and connoisseur of classic cinema, she found joy in stories both written and filmed.
As per her wishes, there will be no formal service. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday March 14 from 2pm to 4pm at Girard Park Pavillion. We kindly ask in lieu of flowers, donations be made to support local animal shelters.
We would like to thank the staff of Camelot of Broussard for giving Claudette the care and compassion that she deserved in her final months. We would like to also thank Our Lady of Lourdes, Dr. Ashley Guy, Dr. Michael Liu and the many other health care professionals who helped her on her long journey.
Rest and relax peacefully, Claudette. You deserve to get back what you so freely and graciously gave away.
