New Iberia " Funeral Services will be conducted for Sheldon J. Landry, Age 81, at 10:00AM Friday, April 30, 2010 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with Father Mark Derise officiating. Interment will follow at Holy Family Mausoleum. Visitation will be Thursday April 29, 2010 from 5:00PM until 9:00PM with a Rosary being prayed at 7:00PM. Visitation will resume Friday from 8:00AM until service time. Military graveside services will be conducted by VFW Post 1982. A native of Jeanerette and longtime resident of New Iberia, Mr. Landry died Monday April 26, 2010 at 1:28PM in a local health care facility. He served in the U.S. Military for a total of 40 years. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in Feb. 1948 serving until July of 1954. He then served in the Air Force Reserve for 3 years. In 1957 he joined the Army National Guard for 13 years achieving the rank of Master Sgt. In 1970 he joined the Army Reserve until 1983 at which time he retired from the Active Reserve with the rank of Sgt. Major. He then joined the inactive Army Reserve until 1989 and retired with the rank of Sgt. Major. He was a graduate of Jeanerette High School class of 1947. In 1956 he graduated from S.L.I. with a degree in elementary education. He did post graduate work at U.S.L., L.S.U. and Old Miss universities. He received a Masters Degree in administration and supervision from U.S.L. in 1961. He began his teaching career at Elizabeth Forgey (Now North Lewis Elementary), Dodson Elementary and New Iberia Junior High. He was then principal at Grand Marais Elementary, Peebles Elementary and Hopkins St. Elementary. He retired in 1988. From 1988 until 1997 he taught at Catholic High School. He was a member of the Retired Teachers Assn., Ancient Order to the Creole Gourmet, Knights of Columbus Council 3425, member of VFW post 1982, member and past commander of American Legion Post #4, past member of the New Iberia Lions Club and the Krewe of Andalusia. He was also a Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and a member of Senior Friends. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Landry Lange and husband Harry of Franklin; one brother, Gerald J. Landry S.J. (Jesuit Brother) of Dallas, Texas and one sister, Jeanette L. Melancon and husband James of Baton Rouge. Grandchildren, Clay Gerald Landry and wife Lauren of Lydia, Damian J. Landry and fiance Melody of Franklin, Shellie Aguilar and husband Juan of New Iberia and Kristi R. Lange of Lafayette; Great Grandchildren, Donavan Landry, Debra and Brandon Brown, Michael Aguilar, Cameron Stepelcovich, Jodie Lemaire, Jade Lange, Jamie Dye, Jensen Dye, Jasmine Crawford and Jase Crawford; Great Great Grandchildren, Selena, Zekiel and Lorenzo Lemaire; 6 nieces and 3 nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Wiltz Landry; parents, Dumas and May Simoneaux Landry; one daughter, Debra Lynn Brown Wiltz; one brother, Jerry F. Landry and one sister Loyd L. Sapienza. Pallbearers will be David Dumont, Paul Wiltz, Kenny Melancon, Jamie and Jensen Dye and Juan Aguilar. The family would especially like to thank the Dr.'s and staff of the ICU department at Iberia Medical Center. David Funeral Home, 1101 Trotter St. New Iberia, La.
