Ms. Dore died late Saturday night after a years-long battle with melanoma; a fight through which her gregarious nature and boundless optimism never dimmed.
"Genie," as she was known to friends and family, was born in New Iberia and attended Mt. Carmel Academy. She graduated from the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now ULL), raised two sons, and worked as a paralegal for various New Iberia law firms. Genie's adventurous spirit, however, never allowed her to remain in one place for very long. She moved with her family to a fifty acre cattle ranch outside of Rayne, La and later to a waterfront lot in coastal Mississippi. Then, in her early fifties, Genie fulfilled a lifelong dream when she moved to western North Carolina to own and operate vacation cottages on a beautiful Blue Ridge mountainside. Eventually she relocated to the Houston area to focus on her cancer treatment. No matter where she went, she made warm and lasting friendships and left each place a little better than when she arrived.
Through it all, Genie's nimble intellect and versatile abilities helped her excel at a diverse array of jobs. Her sharp mind served her well in law and made her indispensable as a paralegal in multiple states. Her hospitality made her a valued member of a customer relations team at a tribal casino. Her compassion and patience served her as a teacher of children with special needs.
This variety of jobs, addresses and achievements- enough, perhaps, to fill a few lifetimes - attests to what was Genie's most admirable trait of all: her ability to fearlessly follow her heart.
Genie is survived by her sons, Jason Dore and David Dore; her grandsons, Alex Dore and Lucas Dore; her sisters, Sandra DeBlanc, Carole Broussard, and Mary Ball; and her brother, Cyrus DeBlanc.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis Carroll DeBlanc and Ruth Buchanan DeBlanc.
David Funeral Home of New Iberia 1101 Trotter St. (337) 369-6336 will be handling the arrangements.
